Building bridges between commerce and conservation
Marblethorn emerged from a straightforward observation: most businesses want to reduce their environmental impact, but lack the expertise to navigate the complex landscape of ecological management, regulatory frameworks, and practical implementation.
Our background
We started working with Sheffield-based manufacturers who faced mounting pressure to demonstrate environmental accountability. Early projects focused on waste reduction and energy efficiency, but we quickly recognised that isolated interventions rarely produce lasting change. Effective environmental management requires systemic thinking, cross-departmental coordination, and long-term commitment.
Over time, our focus expanded to encompass broader ecological considerations: biodiversity impacts, supply chain emissions, water management, and habitat restoration. We developed relationships with local conservation groups, research institutions, and regulatory bodies, building a network that allows us to offer comprehensive support rather than fragmented advice.
How we work
Assessment first
We begin every engagement with thorough site analysis and data collection. This includes reviewing operational processes, interviewing key personnel, and conducting environmental audits. We cannot recommend solutions without understanding context.
Collaborative strategy
Environmental initiatives succeed when they involve people across the organisation. We facilitate workshops that bring together operations, finance, and leadership teams to develop strategies that reflect diverse perspectives and secure buy-in from the start.
Phased implementation
Large-scale change happens incrementally. We break down complex environmental programmes into manageable phases, each with clear objectives, timelines, and success metrics. This allows organisations to demonstrate progress while maintaining operational stability.
Ongoing support
Our relationship does not end when a plan is delivered. We provide ongoing monitoring, help teams navigate challenges, and adjust strategies as circumstances evolve. Environmental management is not a one-time project but a continuous process of improvement.
Areas of expertise
Carbon accounting
Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions measurement following GHG Protocol standards. We work with organisations to establish accurate baselines and track reduction progress over time.
Circular economy integration
Strategies to keep materials in use longer through reuse, repair, refurbishment, and recycling programmes that reduce virgin resource extraction.
Ecological surveying
Habitat assessments, species inventories, and biodiversity net gain calculations conducted by qualified ecologists familiar with UK conservation requirements.
Environmental permitting
Support with obtaining and maintaining environmental permits, including waste management licences, discharge consents, and abstraction authorisations.
Supply chain mapping
Identification of upstream and downstream environmental impacts, helping organisations understand the full lifecycle implications of their products and services.
Stakeholder engagement
Facilitation of dialogue between businesses, local communities, and environmental organisations to build trust and align interests around conservation goals.
Our standards
We adhere to professional standards set by environmental bodies and incorporate best practices from conservation science. Our recommendations are grounded in peer-reviewed research, and we maintain transparency about uncertainties and limitations in environmental modelling.
We do not overstate potential outcomes or make guarantees about environmental performance. Ecological systems are complex, and results depend on factors beyond any consultant's control. What we can promise is rigorous analysis, honest communication, and strategies designed to maximise the likelihood of positive outcomes.
